Sepia Portrait Workshop
5 Comments
On May 8th I will be offering a one-day portrait workshop through The Art School in Vestal, NY. Attendees will learn to create monochromatic “sepia” oil portraits using just Raw Umber paint.
Sepia paintings can serve as finished works of art or be used as underpaintings – when painting from life, I start almost all of my color portraits this way. I’ve also found this technique to be an incredibly enjoyable way to learn to paint in oils, since it bridges the gap between drawing and painting and allows for endless, painless correction of your work.
In the morning, I will demonstrate by working from a live model. After lunch, attendees will paint from the model under my supervision. Adults and teens of all levels of experience are welcome.

Saturday, May 8th, 2010 · 9:30am–4:30pm

so happy to see your work and be a part of your journey…we get ongoing compliments on my portrait….your work is wonderful..hello to katie and you too……ruthie
Thanks Ruthie … your portrait was definitely a special one. The new site allows me much more room to expand, so when I have time I’ll have to post some of my earlier works. Best wishes from Kathryn and me!
Joseph this Nick from NC You sent me a email sometimes ago about edges and so fort. I am so glad to hear You are teaching. I am interested in your workshop for one day doing Sephia portraits and the cost being only 50 dollar is awesome. The problem is I live in NC. I would love to come to it. I would like to ask about lodging nearby can I call to see if I can afford and come up and take the work shop.
Thanks Nick
excuse me …can i ask one question please ?
do you just use burnt umber for these portraits or do you use white and black as well ?……….
thank you ..i hope you can help me
Hi Dean,
I actually use raw umber, not burnt … and I rarely use white, since it changes the color of everything and makes corrections more difficult. The lighter areas are just the white of the canvas showing through. But sometimes I will use white in landscapes, especially in the sky, as it provides an interesting contrast. Also, in this painting, I painted the sky, roof and foreground opaquely (raw umber + white), and the pond and the dragon transparently (no white):
