Overview: The bulk of my commissioned portraits are near- to life-sized, full color oil paintings on linen canvas. If you happen to live anywhere near Binghamton, NY I would be happy to paint your portrait from life, but for long distance commissions, my procedure is generally as follows…
1. Meeting: A preliminary meeting to discuss portrait size, composition, clothing, and setting – preferably before the day of the photo session so that there is no rush.
2. Photo Session: Once a general conception of the portrait has been established, I conduct a digital photography session – usually in the client’s home or office. Client and artist then review the photographs together on a laptop to ensure that the best image is found.
3. Studio Work: At home, I continue to fine tune the reference photographs on my computer. The client is then emailed a proposed composition, along with several choices of facial expressions for the portrait. Upon client approval of the reference material, a 40% deposit is due and the painting begins.
4. Life Sitting: After working on the painting in my studio, I ship the almost-completed portrait to the client. I then travel for a final life sitting of about three hours to put finishing touches on the painting. During this session my aim is to enhance the portrait’s expression and carry out any reasonable alterations which the client may request. Upon client approval of the finished portrait, the remaining balance is due.
In Short… My portrait process involves two visits to your location. I usually travel with my wife Kathryn, whose expenses are paid by us. We are happy to stay at your family’s home, a hotel, or in any other convenient accommodation. On the day of the photo session, I ask that the sitter be available all day – even though he or she should only need to be in front of the camera for an hour or two. The return visit is generally less involved for the sitter. Depending on my workload at the time of your commission, you can expect to receive the finished painting 4–12 months after the initial photo session.

Overview: I also offer sepia oil portraits and charcoal drawings in a “head & shoulders” size (ranging from 16×20″ to 19×24″, depending on the client’s preference). A sepia portrait is an oil painting on linen canvas. Only raw umber paint is used, in varying degrees of thickness, letting the white of the original canvas show through for the light areas (similar to watercolors or charcoal).
I can create a sepia portrait from life or from photographs, either in the client’s home or in my NY studio. A $500 discount is given if the sitting takes place in my studio.
Life Sittings: When working from life, I aim to complete the portrait in one session of approximately 6 hours. The sitter generally takes 5 minute breaks every 20 minutes or so (or as often as needed), with a longer break for lunch somewhere along the way.
Photography: When working from photographs, I first conduct a photo session of around 1-2 hours, then review the images together with the client. Upon client approval of the reference photos, a 40% deposit is due. The finished portrait will be shipped to the client, at which time the remaining balance is due.
As it is important that my paintings be based on my own personal experience with the subject, the client’s own photographs will not be considered for use.
